FLAMINGOS-2 is a near-infrared imaging spectrograph at Gemini-South, offering observations in the 1.0-2.4 μm wavelength range in a 6.1 arcmin circular field of view. Currently, imaging and long-slit spectroscopy modes are offered, while the multi-object spectroscopy mode is awaiting its commissioning.

FLAMINGOS-2 was originally built by the University of Florida Astronomy Department and delivered to Gemini in July 2009, where it underwent a series of refurbishments and commissioning runs. It has been in regular queue operation mode since semester 2013B.

Performance overview: Imaging

The intrinsic point spread function of FLAMINGOS-2 has a FWHM of 0.36 arcsec across the full field (see image quality). These values are also reached in good seeing conditions on sky, in particular in K-band. The on-axis plate scale is 0.1792 arcsec / pixel, meaning FLAMINGOS-2 becomes critically sampled in very good seeing conditions. Currently, observations can be made in J, H, Ks broand-band filters as well as two medium-band filters that split the K-band in two. More filters are available, but they are not installed in FLAMINGOS-2 at all times.

Performance overview: Long-slit spectroscopy

FLAMINGOS-2 offers two low resolution grisms (R~900) covering the JH and HK spectral ranges, respectively. The medium resolution grism covers the J, H, K bandpasses separately (R~2600). The spectral resolution is a strong function of slit width and wavelength for all grisms, reaching its maximum near the center of the respective bandpass. Details can be found at the grisms web page.
